The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and Consumer Reports work collaboratively to create a list of the safest vehicles for new teen drivers. And this year, the results include eight Subaru vehicles that parents should consider when purchasing a new or used vehicle for their teen driver or one the teen will be using.
What Consumer Reports Say About Subaru
Before getting into the specific models that got the most praise and awards from Consumer Reports, it is vital to know how they view Subaru as a company. Consumer Reports considers Subaru the best mainstream automaker. In addition, this high ranking is nothing new. Subaru has earned more safety awards than any other automaker since 2013. In addition, the Forrester has been a Top Pick of Consumer Reports for ten consecutive years.
How the Vehicles Were Judged
The field of vehicles included 46 used models and 16 new selections this year. Both the IIHS and Consumer Reports evaluated the vehicles this year based on:
- Vehicle type
- Size
- Reliability
- Emergency handling
- Braking distance performance
- Safety rating
- Insurance claims rate
In addition, the vehicles were rated in three frontal crash tests. The results allow the two test experts to create two vehicle lists, the best and good, respectively. The results for the best list of new vehicles included four Subaru models:

- Subaru Forester
- Subaru Legacy
- Subaru Outback
The best used vehicles tested also included four Subaru models:
- Subaru Impreza sedan or 5-door (2018, 2022)
- Subaru Legacy (2013-2021: built after August 2012)
- Subaru Outback (2015-2018, 2022)
- Subaru Forester (2018 or newer)
