In July, Subaru of America, inc. announced that the 2024 Subaru Forester received the highest possible rating from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). Forester was one of only four small SUVs out of eight to receive the superior rating. The test addresses costly repairs in low-speed collisions while backing up. Forester features Reverse Automatic Braking, an active safety feature that helps prevent rear-end collisions. If you live in or near Union City, Mountain View, or Newark, you can find the 2024 Subaru Forester at Premier Subaru of Fremont.
The Importance of The Top Safety Award
IIHS began testing rear crash prevention systems in 2018 and they periodically add to the ratings. The rating scale includes “Basic”, “Advanced”, and “Superior” ratings. Basic rating is earned if the vehicle has parking sensors that provide a warning, rear cross-traffic alerts or both. If a vehicle has rear Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), the rating is determined according to their performance in three different tests using a passenger vehicle target with different approach angles and one test using a bollard, representing a pole or garage pillar.
The full evaluation includes 24 test runs conducted at 4 MPH, weighing some scenarios heavier than others. Scoring occurs based on vehicles that avoid the target or reduce speed to 1 MPH before hitting. Almost 30% of collision claims in 2022 were filed due to rear impact points, costing more than $4,000 in damage. With rear AEB as an optional feature on the vehicle, damage amounts are reduced to as little as $600.
The AEB test is designed to evaluate how well these systems prevent the most common reverse crashes. It’s a challenging test that creates different backing scenarios by emulating a pole or another vehicle behind you and off to the side since sometimes you are turning when you back up.
Reverse Automatic Braking or RAB systems are designed to avert or reduce collision damage. The system accomplishes this by using sonar sensors mounted in the rear bumper cover so the system can pick up obstacles behind you when you back up. Since it is an automatic system, it slows the vehicle down or stops enough to reduce or avoid any collision damage.
Subaru Forester
In addition to the RAB system, Subaru EyeSight also offers several other driver-assistive safety features to help keep you safe on the road. Other available features include Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. The Subaru DriverFocus provides a Distraction Mitigation System, Reverse Automatic Braking, and several other available features.
The Forester delivers an excellent blend of SUV capability, and a car-like ride and handling with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive, Active Torque Vectoring, and Vehicle Dynamics Control. Subaru Forester has a standard 8.7-inches of ground clearance or 9.2 inches of clearance for the Forester Wilderness trim.
